The hot water cascaded down Devika's body in a steady, rhythmic stream, turning her caramel skin a flushed pink. She stood beneath the showerhead, eyes closed, letting the heat penetrate her sore muscles. The bathroom was filled with steam, the mirrors fogged, the air thick and humid with the scent of jasmine from the soap she used.
She hadn't heard the front door open. Hadn't heard Arav's footsteps as he climbed the stairs, loosening his tie, his body heavy with the exhaustion of a long day at the office. All she knew was the water, the heat, and the sweet relief of being alone with her thoughts.
